Emergency and exit lighting laws for the office in Australia are governed by the Building Code of Australia (BCA) 2010 and Australian Standard AS2293.The following are some of the requirements for emergency and exit lighting in Australia:

  • All commercial and high occupancy residential buildings require emergency lighting and fire exit signs.
  • Emergency lighting is compulsory and requires mandatory testing every 6 months.
  • All lights must meet Australian Standard AS2293.
  • For all Class 6 buildings over 100m2, emergency lights are required; and all Class 6 buildings require at least one exit sign.
  • Any building that is over 300m2 requires emergency and exit lighting, with the location of the lighting determined by each room’s access to an exit with adequate light in the case of an emergency.
